How Does Klaviyo Work? A 2026 Guide to Flows, Segmentation, and AI

Klaviyo is an email and SMS platform built specifically for ecommerce, and it works by combining your store's actual customer and order data with automated, behaviour-triggered sends.

That data connection is the whole point. A generic ESP sends the same email to everyone on a list. Klaviyo can trigger a specific email or text the moment someone abandons a cart, finishes a first purchase, or browses a product without buying, because it's reading directly from your Shopify data in real time.

Here's what that actually looks like in practice, what's genuinely new in 2026, current pricing, and where the platform's features stop being useful and start being a distraction.

What is Klaviyo, in plain terms?

Klaviyo is marketing automation software for email and SMS, built around your store's own customer data rather than a generic contact list.

Every profile in Klaviyo carries real purchase history, browsing behaviour, and engagement data, which is what lets a flow trigger off actual behaviour instead of a fixed schedule.

The Shopify integration

Klaviyo connects to Shopify in a few clicks, and once it's connected, every order, product view, and cart event becomes something you can build a send around.

That's the main reason most Shopify brands default to Klaviyo over a generic email tool. The integration isn't an add-on, it's the foundation the whole platform is built on.

Integrations beyond Shopify

Klaviyo also connects to over 200 other tools, from reviews platforms to loyalty apps to helpdesk software, so customer data from those tools can feed into the same segmentation and flow logic.

More integrations mean more data. More data only helps if you're using it to improve the four flows that actually drive revenue, not to build increasingly narrow segments for their own sake. More on that below.

The core flows most brands start with

1. Welcome flow. Triggered when someone joins your list, this is the first real conversation with a new subscriber and typically the highest-converting flow most brands run.

2. Abandoned cart. Triggered when someone adds to cart but doesn't check out. This is usually the single highest-ROI flow on the platform, because it's reaching someone at the exact point they showed intent.

3. Post-purchase. Triggered after a first order, aimed at turning a one-time buyer into a repeat customer. This is where most of the actual retention work happens.

A fourth flow, browse abandonment, triggered by product views without a cart add, rounds out the four that most brands should get right before building anything more elaborate. Between them, these four typically account for 80-90% of all flow revenue. If your flow revenue feels flat, re-optimising these four will move more than adding a fifth or sixth flow will.

Klaviyo's AI features in 2026

Klaviyo has built out a genuine AI layer on top of the core platform, and it's worth knowing what it actually does.

Predictive analytics now model customer lifetime value and expected next-order date per profile, using purchase history rather than guesswork, which is useful for spotting who's likely to lapse before they actually do.

AI-assisted send-time optimisation adjusts when a given subscriber receives a send, based on their own engagement history rather than a single fixed send time for the whole list.

The AI Content Wizard generates draft copy and subject lines to speed up production, which is genuinely useful for volume, but it's a starting point for a human editor, not a replacement for one.

None of this is a substitute for the four flows above. A brand with mediocre flows and every AI feature switched on is optimising the wrong layer. Get the fundamentals right first, then let AI speed up execution on top of them.

What does Klaviyo cost in 2026?

Klaviyo moved to active-profile-based billing in February 2025, replacing the old model based on email send volume. That matters because a large but disengaged list now costs more to keep than it used to, which is one more reason to keep your list clean rather than just large.

Current tiers: free up to 250 profiles, with 500 email sends and 150 SMS credits a month. Paid email plans start around $20/month for 500 contacts and scale from there, roughly $150/month at 10,000 contacts and up toward $1,380/month at 100,000. Combined email and SMS starts around $35/month. Accounts spending over $10,000/month move to Klaviyo One, which carries a 20% surcharge on top of usage.

Segmentation: useful, but not the whole game

Klaviyo makes it easy to build increasingly narrow segments, by purchase count, product category, engagement recency, and dozens of other fields.

That capability is genuinely useful once you're operating at scale. Below eight figures in revenue, it's usually overkill. Go broad, maximise reach, and execute the core four flows brilliantly before you start splitting your list into a dozen micro-segments that each get a handful of sends a month.

Finding the right Klaviyo partner

Klaviyo rewards good implementation and punishes bad implementation more than most platforms, because the automation runs whether or not anyone's watching it closely.

A good partner audits your existing flows before touching anything, rather than proposing a rebuild on day one.

Frequently asked questions

What is Klaviyo used for?
Email and SMS marketing automation for ecommerce, built around real customer and order data so sends can trigger off actual behaviour like an abandoned cart or a first purchase, rather than a fixed broadcast schedule.

How much does Klaviyo cost?
Free up to 250 profiles. Paid plans start around $20/month for email only, scaling with your number of active profiles rather than email volume since the February 2025 pricing change. Combined email and SMS starts around $35/month.

How does Klaviyo's AI help optimise email send times?
It adjusts delivery time per subscriber based on that person's own historical engagement pattern, rather than sending the whole list at one fixed time.

What is Klaviyo's AI Content Wizard, and how can it help?
It generates draft email copy and subject lines to speed up production. Treat it as a first draft tool for your team to edit, not a finished send.
